The Panhandle region is composed of
the five northern counties of Idaho (Benewah, Bonner, Boundary,
Kootenai & Shoshone). While most Extension faculty and staff
within the region had worked to assist colleagues within the
surrounding counties, no formal structure had been implemented
(except for an Area Forester) to address Extension programming on
a multi-county basis. With budgetary cuts and the loss of
two Extension faculty positions within the Panhandle, plus the
demands associated with building/maintaining a strong 4-H/Youth
program, Extension Administration formalized three areas within
Idaho to serve as model sites for future 4-H programming efforts
throughout Idaho - the Panhandle region was one of the sites
selected. Local Extension
offices are maintained in four of the five counties (all but
Shoshone County). Under the new 4-H program management
procedures, the 4-H Program Coordinators (Bonner &
Kootenai/Shoshone) and the 4-H Program Assistants (Benewah &
Boundary) will be responsible for day-to-day management of the
local program, activities, and events. An Area 4-H/Youth
Extension Educator, housed in Coeur d'Alene will provide
leadership in developing continuity within the 4-H program across
the Panhandle region, provide educational programs to support
volunteer leader training, and serve as the liaison for the region
on various state-level committees; plus providing some local
program support in Kootenai County.
