A message from the President of
District II Idaho Youth Horse Council

What exactly is the District II Youth Horse Council?  It is a District Council whose purpose is to coordinate horse activities in Idaho in order to obtain maximum benefits of the horse for developing youth. The horse has proven to be a wonderful vehicle for enhancing human, and especially youth, behavior.

District II is responsible for the educational events and promotional programs such as: District Horse Contests which include: Horse Judging, Hippology, Individual and Team Demonstrations, Public Speaking and Horse Bowl. The Council also supports horse project members with scholarships each year, as well as promotion and sponsorship of the prestigious Idaho Horsemanship Award.

The majority of the members involved in District II are volunteers from throughout the counties. Volunteers partner with the University of Idaho Cooperative Extension and receive strong support from 4-H Educators, program managers and coordinators. Staff members from our counties in the district keep everyone focused on goals and help maintain the educational integrity of the council.

Our most important goals are to stimulate learning, encourage success, promote citizenship, advance sportsmanship, as well as to educate and prepare our youth to enter adulthood with a strong set of “life skills’. Research proves the tools described above produce well adjusted, confident, upstanding citizens and happy individuals.

Hey, you thought District II Youth Horse Council was all about horses didn’t you?  Don’t be fooled, the horse in this case is the means to an end. Unlimited opportunities to develop life skills, education and friendships await youth who participate in the activities and programs provided through the District. Can you think of a better way to learn and have fun at the same time?

If you belong to a youth horse organization such as FFA, junior breed group, Pony Club or 4-H and are interested in learning more about District II Youth Horse Council and the opportunities available, please contact your local University of Idaho Extension Office for information.
