BOISE, Idaho—University of Idaho Extension invites green industry professionals and the general public to “Slow the Flow Idaho” on June 16—a free afternoon of tips, techniques and technologies to help save water while creating attractive landscapes.

Slated for 1-6:30 p.m. at the Ada County Extension Office, 5880 Glenwood Ave., the event responds to Idahoans’ increasing demand for information about water-conserving landscapes, said Tony McCammon, University of Idaho Extension educator in Payette County.

“We live in a desert, and we’re spreading our natural resources of water too thin,” McCammon said. “There are lots of ways to save water and lots of beautiful native plants that grow well in this area, and people are becoming much more receptive to the principles and practices of drought-tolerant landscaping.”

“Slow the Flow Idaho” will include presentations on western Idaho’s native and woody plant options, roof gardens, water-efficient turfgrass mixes, edible landscaping, water-use tips and measurement, sustainable landscaping equipment—including sprinkler clocks and weather-responsive scheduling devices—and Project WET (Water Education for Teachers).

The event is free, and snacks will be provided. To pre-register, call McCammon at (208) 642-6022 or e-mail tonym@uidaho.edu in Payette.
5-22-09: I wanted to pass on a wonderful  opportunity for our club. The Mountain Home Garden Tour is June 20 this year. The theme is “Through the Garden Gate”. I got a call from Patty Walborn asking if we would like to set up a table or two at some of the homes on the tour. We could have information about the MG club, demonstrate or teach something. I think it is a great idea. Please email me and let me know if you would like to participate and any ideas that you have. Kim Kovac

June 18: Meeting at the Mtn Home Sr. Citizen Center for weeding.
Present: Jack Murphy, Vice President
Vickie Borsos     Linda Daniels Al Morgan Connie Morrison

Next Meeting: July 2, 2009, 6 pm, at Legacy Park, to be a meeting and potluck dinner
I.  Since this was a “work” meeting, we jumped right in pulling weeds from among the cacti and roses.  We worked about an hour and did a very nice job.  Each person signed a form for the Senior Center Director to use to get additional services based on our volunteer hours.

II.  Jack took the opportunity to tell us about the community garden that he was been planning in an open area along the walking path (between N 3rd E and N 6th E).  We drove to the parking area at N 3rd E and McMurtrey Rd and walked to the new garden area.  He had already built one raised bed using railroad ties and can build as many as we need; he obtained all the supplies and equipment from the City (with their permission, of course).  There is sprinkler coverage for the area, so we won’t have to worry about watering.  Linda is to plant some tomato plants in the raised bed as soon as it is filled with soil.  Jack has great ideas for the area and it will be a nice place for us to use to garden.  He suggested we grow vegetables for the Senior Center to use and maybe sell the excess.
III.  Snacks and drinks were provided by Linda.
Volunteer hours from the 18th:  Jack-1 hr,  Connie-1 hr,  Vicky-1 hr,  Linda-1 hr,  Al-1/2 hr.
 JUNE 4TH, 2009
Meeting was held at Shirley Miller’s home, those in attendance were, Shirley, Lori, Joan,
Ellen, Vickie, Bob, Tim, Edna, April, Al, Joseph, Mile and Sherry Wilson.
Meeting was called to order by Lori, Kim was ill and was unable to attend. Lori updated us on  things Kim wanted us to know.  She discussed a web site where we could sell our plants and discussed the upcoming Garden show on the 20th.  We need Volunteers for the Booth that we will set up for the Show. We will not be at the Farmers Market on the 6th of June but will be there on the 13th.  If you have anything you would like to donate for the market please see Kim.
Linda Daniels suggested a work meeting for the 18th and it was decided that we would go to the Senior Center and pull weeds or do whatever needs doing.  We will meet briefly before we start to work for updates etc.  The census was that we need to have a work meeting, class or something constructive for at least one of our monthly meetings, suggestions will be appreciated.
The first meeting for July will be on the 2nd. And it was decided it will be a picnic at Legacy Park.  Let Kim know what you will bring so we don’t duplicate things.
Discussed Shirley's problem spot in back yard and it was suggested that to try Iron and Humis.
Business meeting was adjourned because Lori doesn’t do well in lightning. Plants were shared after the meeting and there are still more if anyone wants to come and see if you would like any of them.
Linda Daniels brought in some craft  for making magnets and plant stakes for sale some were assembled during the meetthat we have at least one per month at someone’s home.  It was well received by those present and the June 4th meeting will be held at Shirley's house.
Place: 1033 SE Hamilton Rd.  Individuals who have problem areas at their home can get practical experience in dealing with it. The group can have discussions about possible solutions

 Meeting adjourned at 7:00PM
