Crops

Commercial farms in Nez Perce County produce primarily wheat and barley.  Alternative rotational crops grown are peas, lentils, chickpeas, rapeseed, canola, mustard, safflower, oats, and buckwheat.  These crops are produced in diverse topographical zones bounded by the varying parameters of elevation, rainfall, and soil type.

Crop producers face numerous pressures posed by low commodity prices, environmental regulations, rising production costs, and competition for export markets.  UI/Nez Perce County Cooperative Extension System educational programs support the contribution of small grains and alternative crops to the economy of Nez Perce County and north central Idaho.  Environmental concerns and the growers' ability to compete in today's market place are addressed.  Crop advisory committees guide programming development by prioritizing the educational needs of our area farmers.

Horticulture

The Lewis-Clark Valley has a growing season of over 200 days.  Home gardeners and local commercial enterprises take advantage of the extended growing season in a variety of horticultural interests.

A wide spectrum of gardening inquiries are answered annually concerning plant variety selection, culture, husbandry, and pest control.  The UI/Nez Perce County Horticultural Advisory Committee plays a pivotal role in identifying and prioritizing programming, classes, and seminars to meet the educational needs of the community.

Master Gardener Program

The University of Idaho Master Gardener Program is an educational opportunity designed to meet the gardening information needs of the community. The program's purpose is to more effectively extend technical assistance and provide information in the areas of home horticulture to people within the community through the use of qualified volunteers.

This program is open to individuals who have an interest and appropriate knowledge or skills in gardening, ornamental horticulture, or general plant-related topics. Those individuals also must be available to complete 40 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of volunteer service.

Plant Clinic Information  One of the best places to get common-sense answers for your gardening questions is the Plant Clinic, which will be operating during the growing season beginning May 22.   Drop in to the Plant Clinic on Tuesdays between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the University of Idaho/Nez Perce County Cooperative Extension System Office, 1239 Idaho Street, Lewiston.
