The Nez Perce Reservation
Extension Program was funded by the USDA-CSREES in 2007 and the
new office was opened in February 2008 in Lapwai, Idaho. This
program was made possible by a partnership with the Nez Perce
Tribe who is providing the office space. This is a Federally
Recognized Tribes Extension Program (FRTEP) and Idaho has two
other FRTEP projects, one on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation and
one on the Ft. Hall Reservation.
The Nez Perce Reservation
population is 17,806 (Census 2000). The total Tribal membership
is 3,347 (January 2007). The Nez Perce Indian Reservation was
established in 1863 and is comprised of 770,453 acres in the
northern Idaho panhandle region, and spans four counties.
Approximately 385,227 acres are considered cropland, 261,954
acres are used for grazing, and 100,159 acres are forestlands.
The major extension programming areas are in
youth development, community development, agriculture and
natural resources. The priority educational program area is
currently horsemanship. Please visit the
horse
