  MEET THE STAFF

 Instructors

GARY FORNSHELL
NRC Fish Biology & Aquaculture Instructor

Gary is an Extension Educator in Aquaculture with the University of Idaho, and has been instructing at the NRC for 11 years.  When Gary was the age of an NRC camper, he enjoyed his science classes, as well as grooving to Pink Floyd (in his plaid polyester bell bottoms). Gary claims that he can speak Kikongo, and he loves teaching children about his favorite subject - fish.

BOB JOSAITIS
NRC Range Instructor and
The Expedition, bowl game, rifle range, wall tent challenge, and campfire wood getter- guy

Bob is a Rangeland Management Specialist with the U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service.  For 18 years, he has helped NRC campers get the right start in appreciating their outdoor and natural resource heritage and appreciating the beauty of central Idaho mountains. When Bob was  the age of an NRC camper, he rocked to Dave Mason's "All Along the Watchtower" while wearing his camo pants, and eating anything he caught by hunting or fishing. Bob says his favorite classes in junior high were hunting and fishing after school.  For four winters, Bob lived in a wall tent in the Sawtooth Valley and trapped martens.

WENDY KOONS
NRC Aquatic Education Instructor, Fishing Guide, and Big Wood Simulation Heckler

Wendy is a Habitat Specialist and Project Manager for the Upper Salmon Basin Watershed Program, and is entering her fourth year as "water goddess" at the NRC. When Wendy was the age of an NRC camper, she excelled in Advanced Biology and Woodshop, and loved to rock out to Styx and Peter Frampton in her stone- washed, straight-legged Levi's. A few of Wendy's special talents include reciting all 50 states in alphabetical order and being able to put her foot behind her head.

KRISTIN MAY
NRC Soils Instructor

Kristin is an Area Resource Soil Scientist for the Natural Resources Soil Conservation Service, and is looking forward to her third year of teaching soils at the NRC. Kristin keeps coming back to the NRC because she loves interacting with the campers, as well as for general good-times that are to be had all around.

RUTH RIEPER
NRC Forestry Instructor

Ruth, a forester with the U.S. Forest Service, is adorned with the proper inventory apparel as she leads the campers in forest management classes.

STEVE REDDY
NRC Wildlife Instructor

Steve is a University of Idaho Extension Educator, and has been the Wildlife Instructor for 10 years.  He keeps returning to the NRC because it's fun, and the camp and surrounding mountains are so beautiful.  He really likes the Big Wood Simulation Game. One of Steve's most amazing feats is eating a mustard sardine sandwich with pickled garlic and raw onions.  Lunch was the class he liked best in junior high, and the Doors were his favorite band.

KRISTY BOGUSLAWSKI
NRC Girls Counselor

Kristy, formerly a 4-H Coordinator with the University of Idaho, has been supporting the Cabin Leader program as girls' counselor for three years.  Kristy enjoys watching the campers' faces change from scared and overwhelmed to tearful when forced to leave new friends. At the age of an NRC camper, Kristy was a star in her Journalism classes, and spent a lot of time drooling over Derek Longmuir from the Bay City Rollers. Kristy prides herself on being the only person who has never been found at the NRC Wild Games (must be that fancy camouflage makeup!).

STEVE HINES
NRC Cabin Leader Coordinator and Boys Counselor

Steve is an Extension Educator with the University of Idaho, and has been leading the cabin leader program at the NRC for nine years. Steve enjoys watching kids turn on to the natural world around them.  At the age of 13, you would have found Steve in Lee Cowboy Cut Jeans, jamming to Alabama records, and getting straight A's in his shop and science classes.

DAVE HOWELL,
NRC Camp Paramedic

Dave with his  wife Katie, holding camp and each other together.  Dave is on hand to dispense prescribed medications brought by campers and treat minor injuries to both campers and staff.

Additional Natural Resource Instructors

KEVIN DAVIDSON
NRC Archery Instructor

Kevin is a District Conservationist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and he is into his third year as Archery Instructor at the NRC.  Kevin loves teaching kids, perfecting his form, and just being in the great outdoors.  Although Kevin is in denial that he was ever the age of an NRC camper, he does admit to being a darn good wrestler back in the day.

TERRY HALBERT
NRC Camp Counselor

Terry is the District Manager of the Northside Soil and Water Conservation District and the Idaho Soil Conservation Commission.  He's been a Camp Counselor for four years and enjoys working with campers and the other staff members. Terry especially enjoys how much fun it is to put up the wall tent during the wall tent challenge.  When Terry was the age of an NRC camper, you would have found him listening to Gordon Lightfoot, wearing Levi's 501 jeans, and enjoying his favorite drink, A&W root beer.

KELTON HATCH
NRC Wildlife Instructor

Kelton, the Regional Conservation Educator for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, is using the real hardware to demonstrate the characteristics and differences in Idaho's wildlife during "Hides and Skulls" classes.

DAVID SKINNER
NRC Wildlife Instructor

David is a Wildlife Biologist with the U.S. Forest Service.  He is has a falcon perched on his arm while teaching campers about birds of prey.

CABIN LEADERS

C
abin Leaders are the campers selected each year at the NRC by the adult staff to return to the next camp in peer leadership roles. Selected based on their combination of leadership, knowledge, and inter-personal communication skills and potentials, they receive pre-camp training from the University of Idaho, and as Cabin Leaders, are assigned to supervise and sleep in a cabin with up to a dozen "regular" campers of the same gender.

Cabin Leaders develop and deliver several of the programs and activities for the campers, and provide assistance to the resource instructors during labs and lectures.

The Cabin Leader job position is announced at each camp. Few Cabin Leader positions come open each year for the many campers who turn in applications wishing to return to the NRC.  Even Cabin Leaders themselves have to apply for their own jobs each year! Many Cabin Leaders serve the NRC for multiple consecutive camps, some even up until the age of 18 when they leave for college.

Cabin Leaders play a vital role at the NRC. Congratulations and thank you, Cabin Leaders!
