Payette
County has some of the best fruit producing soils in Idaho not
to mention the long growing season which ripen fruit perfectly
on the vines or trees. The warm and long days of spring and
summer and cool nights result in excellent fruit color and
flavor. This area supports the production of table and wine
grapes, strawberries, apricots, sweet and tart cherries, peaches
and nectarines, plums, pluot, pears and apples trees. Nut trees
such as walnut, pistachio, and filberts also do well. Apples are
by far the most popular fruit grown in the county.
On this web page, you will find information that will assist the homeowner and
the commercial orchardist alike in the production of tree fruits. If you have
questions please email them to Tony McCammon, University of Idaho Payette County
Extension Educator here: Email.

Current
Warnings:
Peach Twig Borer: July 4
Growers in the Treasure Valley should be finishing up sprays for
the first generation treatment on peach, nectarine, and apricot.
2nd Generation sprays began on July 4.
The borer will cause damage to the young shoots and stems, and
future generations will cause damage to fruit. Homeowners
can use: Carbaryl, malathion, permethrin, spinosad, and koalin
clay.
Codling Moth (apple worm): July 4-12
Second Generation Begins
The peak egg hatch
period was drawn out this year due to the cool temperatures.
The second generation is projected to begin hatching July 14th. Sprays applied
before this time will have little effect
unless ovicides are being applied.
Insecticides that target both larva and egg stages are
recommended. Such as: Altacor, Assail, Calypso, and
Intrepid. Homeowners should view the pest advisories at the
bottom of this page for chemical recommendations. Growers should
continue to apply the chosen material(s) at the interval
provided on the label.
