Person: Gordon Keetch
Program Thrust: Competitive Agriculture, Beef Cattle and Natural Resources
Major Programs: Beef Cattle Production and Management, Weed Management, 4-H/Youth Development
Successes and Current Activities: Mr. Keetch provides technical support and conducts applied animal research trials for beef cow-calf producers in Adams and Washington Counties. He has regionally recognized expertise in retained ownership marketing of calves, collecting feedlot and carcass data on over 6,200 head of cattle from 120 ranches in four states. As a result of 13 years of feeding trials, ranchers have increased profitability from their calf sales, improved genetic selection of bulls and replacement heifers, and developed improved herd health programs at weaning. Mr. Keetch conducts winter beef schools for ranchers, provides technical assistance and conducts educational tours/classes for local Coordinated Weed Management Area groups, conducts pesticide re-certification classes for hay growers, facilitates Master Gardener courses for homeowners and provides overall leadership and supervision for the Adams County 4-H program. Mr. Keetch organizes the collection of carcass data for 4-H beef projects in southern Idaho and eastern Oregon and conducts trainings on beef wholesale value for youth exhibitors, using individual animal carcass data.
