Wayne Jones |
| Program Thrust: |
Agriculture – Crops and Urban Horticulture |
| Major Programs: |
Master Gardeners, Potatoes |
| Successes and Current Activities: |
Mr. Jones has teamed with Reed Findlay over the past three years to initiate Spanish language programming for farm workers in eastern Idaho. They initially developed this for the Potato Conference, an annual international program held in Pocatello, ID. However, this became so popular that it was expanded to the Sugarbeet Conference, to summer field educational programs throughout eastern Idaho, and most recently to a Master Gardener program. Mr. Jones has maintained a strong Master Gardener program and has recently augmented that with some Spanish language Master Gardener subject matter programs as well, again in conjunction with Mr. Findlay. The Bonneville County Master Gardener program has graduated 656 participants since it was reinstated in 1991. Over the last two years alone (2003 and 2004), Bonneville County received over 6,100 volunteer hours from its graduates. |

Ms. Petty has focused her efforts on marriage education and youth financial literacy in recent years. She developed the curriculum, “Married and Loving It”, a five part program to strengthen marriage relationships. This program has been marketed to and used by educators in 39 different states and 3 foreign countries. Surveys conducted in 2003 of previous program participants reveal that 66% of them rated their marital satisfaction as satisfied or very satisfied before taking the class while 93% rate their marital satisfaction as satisfied or very satisfied since completing the course. Ms. Petty also has been instrumental in delivering youth financial education programs in the form of “Welcome to the Real World” to many youth throughout the District. Through this program students become aware of career choices, learn how to write checks and adopt the skill of balancing a check book. Currently, she has expanded her efforts in adult financial education by developing and presenting a program called “I’m Banking on It” to her clientele. Participants learn about spending plans, savings programs, credit reports, credit scores, and identity theft. |
