Person: Steven Harrison
Program Thrust: Agriculture and 4-H/Youth Development
Major Programs: Farm and Ranch Business Management; Livestock Ultrasound for 4-H
Successes and Current Activities: Mr. Harrison is the sole educator in Caribou County. He has pioneered the use of ultrasound technology as a teaching tool for local 4-H youth with meat animal livestock projects. Using a Gold Certificate Standard (GCS) as the benchmark, Caribou County youth improved from 15% GCS in 1996 to 38% in 2003, largely as a result of his instruction, which included the use of live animal ultrasound. Mr. Harrison is a member of a three person team of District faculty who deliver Farm and Ranch Management educational programs throughout the District. In 2004, 87% of those farm operations taking this class finished their required financial statements. Caribou County has the largest production of dryland barley in the area. He cooperates with cereal specialists to host a dryland spring barley and wheat variety trial. Recently Mr. Harrison has started to work in the Community Development area. He is developing programs in leadership development and community demographics.
