Major Programs: Consumer and Commercial Horticulture, Master Gardener, Emerging Specialty Crops
Successes and Current Activities: Dr. Robbins organizes, trains and supervises over 175 Master Gardener volunteers in 8 counties throughout the Magic and Wood River Valleys. In addition, Dr. Robbins offers advanced trainings for active Master Gardener volunteers and she fosters plant diagnostic clinics in four counties with Master Gardeners as volunteers. Dr. Robbins has established research plots to show the interaction of water rates and fertilizer rates on three species of lawn grass and the feasibility of growing small fruits in District III. Since 1996, Dr. Robbins has spearheaded a team effort to conduct a yearly small farm conference. Over 600 individuals have attended and learned about managing small acreages, specialty crop production, weed management, enterprise budgets and marketing. The intent of these conferences is to help small farmers remain profitable through alternative cropping and creative marketing. Her applied research has focused on specialty potato, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry production, with assessing consumer acceptance of various varieties of these crops as a component of her efforts.
