Person: Steve Hines
Program Thrust: Community Development, Competitive Agriculture, 4-H/Youth Development
Major Programs: Customer Service, Forage Crops, Water Management, Youth Development.
Successes and Current Activities: Mr. Hines provides relevant, issue-based education to producers, county decision-makers, and agency personnel. To support agriculture producers in Lincoln County, he has offered education in the areas of forage production, cereal grain production, and water management. This past year he provided an economic model of the value of irrigation water to the Lincoln County economy to the Big Wood Canal Company. This information is being used as part of an ongoing study to determine the cost effectiveness of water distribution upgrades. With 2005 starting off as a very dry year, a short term study was conducted to help the canal company time the turn on date for the irrigation season. Soil moisture sensors were placed throughout the county and read almost daily to determine when the latest possible turn on date would be. This allowed the company to hold water in the reservoir for one additional week. Mr. Hines also coordinated the Magic Valley Fieldman’s Lunch program for the spring and summer of 2005. This program provides a current issues forum for fieldmen working in the Magic Valley to share information and keep up to date on developing issues. Mr. Hines worked with the South Central Idaho Recreation and Tourism Association to develop and deliver training in the area of customer service for business owners and their employees throughout the Magic Valley. He is working with three Extension peers to co-author a curriculum on this topic to be used throughout the Western Region. Mr. Hines works with two state level 4-H programs. Working with potential 4-H leaders, he trains them in the risk management and teaching methods for delivery of the 4-H rifle project. He also coordinates and trains 16 youth to serve as cabin leaders at the Natural Resources Workshop camp. Mr. Hines is currently serving in positions of leadership in two professional organizations.
