Person: Dale Baker
Program Thrust: Agriculture – Competitive, Profitable Agriculture, Crop Production
Major Programs: Crop Production Cereal Grains, Sugarbeets and Potatoes, Community Development and Youth Education.
Successes and Current Activities: In an increasingly competitive environment, agricultural commodity producers require accurate and timely information on innovations in agronomy, horticulture, economics and management. University specialists generate valuable research and information which can assist producers. Extension educators provide the key linkage to facilitate distribution of information to producer clients. Mr. Baker has organized and cooperated in outreach efforts to deliver that information. He has facilitated a workshop during which more than 100 pesticide application license holders received required in-service training to maintain their certification. He has cooperated in planning statewide conferences for sugar beet and potato producers. He has planned two regional one-day schools for cereal grain producers in south central Idaho. Mr. Baker has worked with research specialists in planting cereal grain research plots at two sites in south central Idaho. This research is part of an ongoing effort to evaluate and compare characteristics of cereal grain varieties. He will follow the progress of these plots through harvest and then provide the results to growers through field tours and distribution of published results. Mr. Baker worked with area youth in evaluating sugar beet projects in the field and has provided assistance in entering livestock projects at several county fairs. He has provided consultation for insurance adjusters who have sought specific climatic and management practice information.

Person: Donna Gillespie
Program Thrust: Family and Consumer Sciences – Youth and Families; 4-H/Youth Development
Major Programs: Leadership Development – Youth and Adults, 4-H Program Outreach through Non-Traditional Projects and Activities, Youth Financial Management, Building Partnerships
Successes and Current Activities: Ms. Gillespie’s programming focus was changed dramatically two years ago when she assumed a major district leadership responsibility for the 4-H program. She and UI Extension Educator Cindy Kinder, with eight county 4-H program coordinators have developed the District III 4-H Team to enhance educational opportunities for volunteers and youth. In 2005 she was awarded $7,180 in grants and contracts as principle author and $134,173 as participating author to support programming in Minidoka County and throughout the District. Her responsibilities include working with adult and youth leaders in district organizations, teen leadership development, enhancing participation in 4-H by non-traditional audiences, and volunteer leader training. She has developed a community service sewing day camp to encourage youth to learn to sew and also assist their communities; this program is now being used in other districts in Idaho and was selected to be part of regional 4-H training. Ms. Gillespie currently serves as president of the Idaho Association of Extension 4-H Agents and in 2005 received state and regional honors for her news articles.
