Person: Rauhn Panting
Program Thrust: Agriculture – Beef, Range Management; 4-H/Youth Development
Major Programs: Beef, Range Management; 4-H
Successes and Current Activities: Mr. Panting has long served ranchers in southeast Idaho with information pertinent to their ecological situations. His historic work has concentrated on improving calf survival with improved calving facilities and improved nutrition via mineral supplementation. A recent survey of those previous activities revealed that 75% of cattlemen in four counties modified their calving facilities because of extension program efforts while 44% modified their mineral supplementation programs for the same reason. Because of the recent discovery of “mad cow” disease in the U.S., Mr. Panting will be working to help local and regional ranchers understand the ramifications of the USDA animal identification regulations. In particular, a required electronic individual animal identification system will necessitate considerable education to make sure that ranchers are aware of their rights and responsibilities to ensure a safe beef supply in the U.S.
