Person: Scott Jensen
Program Thrust: Competitive Agriculture, Natural Resources
Major Programs: Beef Production, Range Management, 4-H/Youth Development
Successes and Current Activities: Mr. Jensen provides technical expertise to ranchers in the areas of marketing, forage production, range management and cow reproductive performance. He has provided leadership in conducting retained ownership programs that provide participants with feedlot performance and carcass value data on cattle entered into the trials. Over 123 ranchers from Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon have benefited from information collected, including improved cattle genetic selection, increased marketing options and more effective herd health weaning programs. Mr. Jensen conducts pasture management shortcourses, winter beef schools, and artificial insemination trainings for ranchers. He has regionally recognized expertise in intensive grazing strategies for improving cattle production and forage resource management. He has partnered with other university specialists and industry to investigate the increased utilization of wet sugarbeet pulp in cattle diets. Initial feeding trials have shown a positive response among specific groups of dairy cattle to feeding wet sugarbeet pulp. Feeding the wet product in place of dried and pelleted beet pulp would reduce air emissions from the coal-fired dryers. This group has attracted a $71,000 grant to conduct nutrition trials and market feasibility studies, which if successful, could improve air quality in southern Idaho. He is working with industry and extension professionals from Idaho and Oregon to develop monitoring, control, and abatement strategies for black fly (buffalo gnat) infestations along the Snake River in Malheur, OR and Owyhee Counties. Mr. Jensen also trains Spanish-speaking employees on improved livestock production methods, organizes educational programs for Owyhee County Cattlemen meetings, and provides technical support and supervision for County 4-H/Youth Development programs.
