Person: Stan Gortsema
Program Thrust: Agriculture – Crop Production; 4-H/ Youth Development
Major Programs: Cereals and Sugarbeets
Successes and Current Activities: Mr. Gortsema has worked with local farmers and a local beef cattle feedlot to help farmers develop an alternative grain crop while providing a reliable feed stock for the feedlot. This project has been ongoing for the last several years and now encompasses approximately 3200 acres of high moisture corn for grain for the feedlot. He helps farmers measure and weigh test plots, and provides information on crop management. As a result, farmers have become more selective of corn hybrids, planting dates and planting rates. This year these growers produced over 444,000 bushels of corn for Snake River Cattle Feeders with a value of nearly $1.4 million. Mr. Gortsema is also involved with Dr. Don Morishita in applied research projects to develop control methods for jointed goatgrass in wheat.
