Science Kit 1 includes the following topics:

BioWHAT????

BioWHAT? is a collection of 3 activities designed to teach kids about the diversity of life, also known as biodiversity. Kids will learn there are three important components of biodiversity: species diversity, habitat diversity and genetic diversity. They will also become more aware of the diversity in their immediate outside environment and begin to understand why diversity is important for the healthy functioning of natural economies.

Science and other skills: Observation, analysis, categorization, sampling (collection), communication

Objectives:

The kids will:

  • Understand the meaning of biodiversity

  • Understand what distinguishes a species

  • Become acquainted with some of Idaho's main habitat types

  • Gain awareness of the importance of biodiversity

  • Understand that all parts of nature contribute to the functioning of the local natural economy

  • Understand how humans are connected to nature

Materials include: Posters & Maps; "Treasure Hunt" Materials (Sweep net, magnification jars, aspirators, plant press, handheld magnifiers); Dry Erase Board; "Faces & Places" Envelopes; 10 "Species Sleuth" Cards; 10 "Species Sleuth" Answer Sheets; 10 Fine-Point Markers; and Extension Activity Materials
