SERVICES PROVIDED BY . . .

Services Provided By . . . will introduce students to the many services provided by nature. Students will discover how humans depend on these services that sustain life on earth. By playing a Jeopardy-like game, called "In Jeopardy" students will reach a consensus on questions about nature's services. Then, in "Harvesting the Goods", they will have the opportunity to use maps to discover how biodiversity around the world supplies us with items we use everyday.

Science and other skills: Problem-Solving, Teamwork, Deduction, Map Reading, Geography, Biology

Objectives:

The kids will:

  • Become acquainted with the services provided by nature that are necessary for our day to day survival

  • Understand that without nature's vital services, it would be impossible to sustain life on earth

  • Review primary producers, consumers, and secondary consumers, and decomposers

  • Discover that people in Idaho are dependent on species from around the world for the goods we use every day

Materials include: 2 "In Jeopardy" Posters, Question Sheet for "In Jeopardy", "In Jeopardy" Poop, Pictures, and Prop Bags, 2 "Key to the Species" Sheets, Arrows for Connecting Props, 2 Animal Calls, 4 Card Packets for "Harvesting the Goods", Map for "Harvesting the Goods", Gum, Hamburger, Fries, and Nail Polish, Markers for Tracing on Map, 2 Green Fabric Circles
