Science Kit 3 includes the following topics:

GOT   H.I.P.P.O.?

A guided brainstorming activity and a board game about the H.I.P.P.O.'s of Idaho introduces kids to the major causes of declining biodiversity. Students will also become familiar with some solutions to reduce the loss of Biodiversity.

By the way, we're not talking about real hippopotamuses here. H.I.P.P.O. stands for the five major causes of declining biodiversity. They are:

                   H - Habitat loss

                   I - Introduced species

                  P - Pollution

                  P - Population growth

                 O - Over-consumption

Science and other skills: Analytical Thinking, Creative Thinking, Verbal and Written Communication, Categorization, Problem Solving

Objectives:

The kids will:

  • Understand 5 major causes of declining biodiversity

  • Become familiar with Idaho Threatened and Endangered species

  • Become acquainted with some solutions to biodiversity issues

  • Understand the differences between prehistoric and present rates of extinction

Materials include: Dry Erase Board, Markers, 5 HIPPO Posters, 1 "Meet the Mighty H.I.P.P.O." Poster, HIPPO Note Cards, 5 HIPPO Game Boards and 5 Boxes of HIPPO Game Supplies, Idaho's Noxious Weed Handbook
