Know Your
Government:
The Idaho 4-H know your government is
held each year in Boise during President's Day Weekend while the
legislature is in session. Over 200 delegates, teen leaders, adult
volunteers, and extension educators participate in the three day
conference. Delegates participate in either a legislative or
judicial track. Eight third-year delegates are Conference reporters.
The KYG Conference combines hands-on
learning in the form of mock committee meetings and mock
trials with the opportunities to meet the real legislators and
observe them in action.
Legislative delegates debate bills
that are being considered by the real legislature and observe the
legislature in session. Judicial delegates learn about the Idaho
Court System from a Supreme Court Justice and stage mock trials.
Conference reporters learn about the news media by producing a news
video and newsletter. On Monday morning legislators from all
over the state and judges from the Boise area join the 4-H'ers for
breakfast.
Each year 13 teens are selected from
applicants at the previous year's conference for the planning
committee and serve in key leadership roles during the Conference.
The 2010 Conference will be held February 13-15. Interest applicant
forms must be turned in to the County
Extension Office by December 1, 2009.
