In 2000, a demonstration project was started in Washington County,
Idaho to help sugarbeet growers evaluate and manage soil moisture at
various depths. Through improved monitoring of soil moisture,
the frequency and duration of irrigation can be managed to minimize
nitrate-nitrogen infiltration to groundwater, minimize irrigation
costs, and minimize spread of diseases associated with excessive
irrigation.
In 2001, the demonstration project in Washington County was expanded
to include onion crops. Information from these studies will be made
available through various publications and through field days and
workshops. |
